Exclusive: Austin Peck Dishes on His 'Tainted Dreams' Role, Returning to 'Days of Our Lives', What's Coming up for his character and so much more!
Austin Peck recently made a return to 'Days of Our Lives' as Austin Reed, he also currently airs on Amazon Prime's 'Tainted Dreams'. Over the years he's been a fan favorite playing different daytime roles which include; Brad Snyder on 'As the World Turns', Rick Powers on 'One Life to Live' and Austin on 'Days'. Soap Opera News caught up with the talented actor to have a chat where he discussed his daytime return, his role on 'Tainted Dreams', what could be in the works for Carrie [Christie Clark] and Austin and so much more. Read the full interview below:
How did you find out you were making a return to Days as Austin Reed? And, what was it like being back on the set, getting familiar again with your former co-stars and especially your on-screen mom Lauren Koslow?
Austin: My manager Michael Bruno gave me a call and said, "great news! They're bringing Austin and Carrie back...! And you're doing it!" So, of course I was thrilled to be back on Days, it's my home and a fantastic show. It was incredible to see everyone after being away. It was all the same but different; like a dream. NBC studios has changed a lot in subtle ways. Same people, new faces, etc... Fran, one of Days stage managers, saw me after TEN YEARS and said dryly, "oh, it's you...", lol. So I body slammed her. Nah... she'd kill me.
One of my highlights was hanging with the coolest ever; Lauren Koslow!! She's one of the few I've stayed in contact with over the years. She cried desperately because she missed me so. It was overwhelmingly sad and pathetic, so I body slammed her. I love hanging out in her dressing room, she's strategically situated and there's constant traffic, so it makes for splendid entertainment. We talk about all things David Bowie; I'm a bigger fan than her! I have more devious motives, I'm really just wanting her rock star coolness to rub off on me.
Reflecting on Austin - what was it like for you, taking over the role from Patrick Muldoon?
Austin: Patrick, Mr. Patrick Muldoon. Does he get asked the question, "what's it like to have Austin Peck take your place"? I bet he doesn't. But I'VE been asked this same question for over the last 20 plus, fricken years. But I love it, I do...no really. I'll answer as best I can...again. Patrick is the coolest, most talented, handsome man to have ever graced the small screen and I have such a bro crush. I can't compare nor ever expect to compete with such a man. It was irrelevant at times, frustrating at others and challenging to replace such a popular actor.
And then your character was married to both sisters - Sami and Carrie - what was that like?
Austin: To be honest, I wish we were living in Salem, Utah, so I could've had both at the same time. lol. "I'm reading this to my wife and she said to make sure that you KNOW I'm being silly and sarcastic because sometimes my humor is misunderstood." The ladies are stupendous and always a joy to work with. Both bring very different vibes and skills to the table and they've never disappointed me; always kept me on my toes.
Can you say how long Austin will be in Salem this time around? And, what can fans expect from Austin?
Austin: This is a short trip for the Reeds. I think Austin wants to spend as little time in Salem as possible. His life tends fall apart when he steps into Salem; which is fantastic for drama. Shitty for him but great TV. I mean, who the hell wants to watch a show of a bunch of perfectly happy, well adjusted people and relationships? So, bring it on! Basically, Austin saves the day. He's so cool! He rescues all of Salem by fighting off space ninjas and defusing a bomb that's set to go off at a wedding with the entire town there. Wait...that was a dream I had. Or...was it?
Will we ever meet Austin and Carrie's child - possibly during your run on the show now?
Austin: Of course you'll meet their kid. He'll come out of the shower (soras. Soap opera rapid aging syndrome) or rush into the scene from the gym, glistening and all pumped up, saying something like, "hello mother, father. Just had a fantastic workout! What's for dinner? I need some protein!" As he flexes. Austin will look at him with such pride, "ah my son. What weight routine did you do? I miss walking around half naked. Did I ever tell you of my time with Greta in virtual reality Eden...?" He responds, "yes father, about a billion times..." "Well, let me tell you again. Fig leaves itch something awful."
And, you were also on As the World Turns and One Life To Live, what were those roles like for you? Was there ever a point you felt like some of "Austin" was being projected in Brad (ATWT) or Rick (OLTL)?
Austin: All I can say about the similarities between characters on the shows is...very little. Rick Powers and Austin Reed? Hmm...do you know what Mr. Powers DOES for a living? Lol. Brad was just way too goofy in comparison to Austin but I loved him so, may he Rest In Peace. I try to bring that into Austin as much as I can but they're very different.
Well, ABC has gotten back the rights to All My Children and One Life to Live and there's the possibility of using One Life to Live characters on General Hospital - would you like to see Rick Powers in Port Charles?
Austin: Rick is a great character to play. I'd reprise him in a New York minute. He's a tough nut or just a nut. I think he'd bring a lot of flavor to wherever he'd show up. He's a dastardly being with a heart of fools gold.
By the way, such good news that the series (Tainted Dreams) was picked up by Amazon.
Austin: Tainted Dreams is the most amazing, incredible show! Watch it damn it!! Watch it now!!! Do It!!!!
What can you say about your role as Max Hillstone in Tainted Dreams?
Austin: Max Hillstone on Tainted Dreams is a scoundrel and a bit of a douche. But lovable. I think...I hope. Well...that's what I tell myself anyway. He's an actor on the soap, Painted Dreams and has a relationship with the producer of the show, Alicia Minshew (the absolute coolest chic!). Alicia is a blast to work with and so funny! Max loves the ladies and the ladies love him and that makes his social calendar full and intricate. So, that's where the douche comes to play.
The whole project was an adventure. Sonia Blangiardo, the creator, is one of my most favorite people in the world! We worked on As the World Turns and One Life to Live together and I'm so honored she created this role for me. Not that I have anything in common with him. I do have this ability to bring a heart to, what seems like, the heartless.
The great thing about Tainted Dreams is, it's an idea that many had but Sonia saw to fruition. All the stories are taken from real life of real people, doing real shows that we all have come to watch and love over the years. The drama behind the drama is so much more fantastic...moohahaha!!!
So fans what are your thoughts? Are you loving that Austin Reed is back on 'Days'? What about Tainted Dreams, have you been watching?
